 What is Spam?

Spam is flooding the Internet with many copies of the same message, in an attempt to force a message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it. Most spam is commercial advertising, often for dubious products, get-rich-quick schemes, or quasi-legal services. Spam costs the sender very little to send -- most of the costs are paid for by the recipient or the carriers rather than by the sender.

Email spam targets individual users with direct mail messages. Email spam lists are often created by scanning Usenet postings, stealing Internet mailing lists, or searching the Web for addresses.

One particularly nasty variant of email spam is sending spam to mailing lists (public or private email discussion forums.) Because many mailing lists limit activity to their subscribers, spammers will use automated tools to subscribe to as many mailing lists as possible, so that they can grab the lists of addresses, or use the mailing list as a direct target for their attacks.

Why do I get this junk?

Many spammers use software to randomly generate possible email addresses at a domain. They also buy, sell, and trade their email lists with other spammers. Unfortunately, some shady websites will sell your information to the highest bidder. We at TCSN strongly oppose this type of behavior. Your email address is your personal information, and we will never give or sell it to anyone.

What can I do to prevent getting spammed?

There are many things you can do to prevent receiving Spam. For starters, do not needlessly post your email address on websites, messageboards etc. Assume that if a website is asking for your email address, they are going to send you mail if you want it or not. Most legitimate websites will leave the email field optional (you do not have to enter an email address if you do not want to), or have an opt-in check box to join their mailing lists.

If you have doubts about submitting your email address to a website, but are required to use one (but you do not expect to do business with the company through email), you might want to use a false email address. A common example of a false email address is adding a 'nospam' into your real email address (example: nosupportspam@tcsn.net).

What can I do about it now?

You can sign up for TCSN's mailFilter service (Free with most TCSN accounts - Call for details)!

The mailFilter program will analyze each incoming message you receive in an attempt to determine if the message could be Spam. We put the message through a battery of tests, checking for typical Spam keywords, checking the subject against our database of known Spam subjects, look for typical Spam traits within the message, etc. If the message passes all these tests, it will be delivered to your email box.

The filtering does not normally cause any delay in delivering your email. Every blocked message will be backed up and filed for 14 days. We do this to allow you to have a message that may have been blocked delivered to your Inbox.

You can setup mailFilter to suit your needs. By default, mailFilter will send you up to one notification daily if it has prevented Spam from being delivered. You can log in to the mailFilter website to check over a list of filtered messages and make sure that nothing important was blocked.

You have the ability to set the filter's sensitivity to various types of spam in order to prevent certain types of messages from being misidentified as spam. You may also add email addresses to permanently "approved" or "blocked" lists.

In addition to spam filtering, the mailFilter also blocks most viruses from reaching your mailbox.

To enable filtering on your email address, enter your email address and password below, then press Submit. After signing up and then logging into the mailFilter, you can link other addresses as alternate addresses to the same message center--this enables Spam for multiple address to be collected under one login address.

I have read and understand the Terms and Conditions, and I will not hold TCSN responsible for any loss of email which results from using the mailFilter.
